The Wheels on the Bus

We did the "wheels on the Bus" last week, and after doing all the hand motions, we let each of the kids choose something to put on the bus. We had snakes, sharks, and lots of dogs and cats on the bus before we were done. What a ride!

Bucket Drumming

This week we've been drumming on empty buckets while reading the book, Tanka, Tanka Skunk. The book has lots of different animals that we drummed to the beat of their names. Then we drummed our own names and talked about how many "beats" (early introduction to syllables!) were in their names. For example, "Jack" has one beat, and "Lauren" has two.

After praciticing the beats, we explored pounding on different parts of our drums, and mallets (using the stick end, tapping on the sides, etc.) Then we put on some drumming music and drummed til we ran out of time, or until our sticks broke - whichever came first.

You can easily make your own drum set with any empty bucket, a dowel (at least 1/2" round) and a rubber ball. Use a sharp object (or a drill!) to make a hole into the ball to insert the stick. Load up with lots of expoxy glue (I use EC6000), and place the ball on top of the stick. Let dry overnight and then start banging!

Handel: Water Music

Frederick Handel was a composer for King George (I forget the number - 13 or something?). King George wanted to have a party on a boat on the river, so he commissioned a piece of music from Handel to play at the party. Handel's orchestra played while riding on one barge, while floating down the river next to another barge with the party-goers.

Today we made a barge in the river and took turns playing music, being waves and fish while listening to Handel's "Water Music"

Saint Saens: Carnival of the Animals

Have you ever heard a song that sounds just like a lion roaring, or an elephant lumbering, or a horse galloping? Well, we have. Last week we learned about Saint Saens who wrote a collection of songs about different animals (you may have seen the paper come home). We listened and colored each animal as we heard their songs. The next day we acted out the animals - lions, elephants, birds, fish, turtles and more!

This past month we have been talking about different composers. (And we'll continue to do more throughout the next few weeks). We talked about Modest Mussorgsky and his composition - "Pictures at an Exhibition". It is a collection of songs written about works of art Mussorgsky saw at an art exhibition. We listened to, and then acted out music about an ox pulling a heavy cart, children dancing in a field, 2 bickering women, and a hut on chicken legs. We drew our own pictures to more of Mussorgsky's music.

The next day we drew pictures and then composed our own music to the pictures we drew. Some of us tapped sticks, while others of us sang our compositions:

Back in February I attended the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio. It was great fun -- well, maybe if you're a music geek.

This is an activity from one of the presenters at the conference -- it was a lot of fun and I found myself marching out the door with a resolve to get myself a bongo drum. The kids loved it and were asolutely exhausted by the time we were done.

This week we sang a song that says "Hi" in many different languages (and the kids even taught me a few of their own). Then we played instruments from around the world, while listening to musical selections from around the world.

My favorite comment of the week? "This was a good day!" (spoken by one of the kids as we returned to class). To quote "the hokey pokey" ---- that's what it's all about!

Composers & Conductors

This week we learned about music jobs - Conductors (who lead a group of musicians in playing a piece of music) and Composers - (who write down the music so musicians can play it).

We looked at a piece of music and noticed all the lines and dots. We talked about how the dots are the notes. Solid notes are different from hollow notes and tell the musician how long to play the note. We also learned that where the note is on the line tells the musician to play high (or low).

We learned about a famous composer: Chopin. Chopin was 6 years old when he started composing, so you don't have to be a big person to compose music. We played pretend pianos to Chopin's "Minute Waltz".

Then we "composed" our own music by coloring in notes on a piece of music.

Then we each got to conduct our music, first by calling out the colored notes on our music score, while the musicians played xylophones, chimes and bells. Finally we waved the baton to lead all our friends in an all-out chime/bell choir!

Jazz Band

Although April is National Jazz Month, we thought we'd get a head start on the celebrating and have a little fun with Jazz music this week.

We learned about a few instruments that are played in a Jazz band such as trumpets, trombones, saxophones, keyboards, clarinets, bass fiddles and drums. We saw lots of pictures, and heard lots of audio samples. We even got to touch and play a few of these instruments:

We found out that blowing a trumpet is hard work! (Don't worry, we had special mouth-piece covers so we wouldn't share germs).

Then we read Ben's Trumpet, by Rachel Isadora about a little boy who wanted to play trumpet, but didn't have one.

We marched around the room to some music by Louis Armstrong (a very famous jazz trumpeter) while playing our own "air trumpets".

And then we listened to Jazz Fly, by Matthew Golub- a story about a fly and his troubles with his jazz band.

Space Week

Back before our days off with the ice storm we had a little outer space fun.

First we pretended to blast off into outer space.

Then we pretended we were shooting stars to the music of Star Trek.

And then we turned out the lights and went on an alien hunt, using our pretend light sabers to the music of Star Wars.

We caught them all and have rid the galaxy of all bad aliens!

Shaker Games

One skill that is important for music is being able to listen and distinguish different sounds and pitches. We played shaker games all week helping us hear similarities and differences of shaker sounds.

Our first game was matching two shakers that sound alike....

We also played a game where each child was given a shaker and they had to move around the room to see if they could find their shaker partner -- the one who had a shaker that sounded just like theirs.

Then we played another game where we worked as teams to find the shaker that matched the one we were given.

You can make your own shakers out of any container that you have at home -- empty butter tubs, easter eggs, frosting containers. Just fill each pair with identical items, seal the tops with tape if necessary, and see how many shaker varities you can create.

It's sticks and drums month!

We've been playing with sticks and drums all month long. We started out by reading a story, Max Found Two Sticks, and tapped on several different kinds of things -- just like Max does in the story.

Then we tapped and sang with our claves (CLAH-vey). We'll keep adding on to the alphabet sequence once we've mastered a few simple moves.

Then we talked about how ANYTHING can be a drum as we read Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb, and tapped out the story on shoe boxes one day, and beach balls the next!

We're talking about pets this week. One pet we discussed was guinnea pigs. My kids had guinnea pigs for a while -- they even spent some time at school in the pre-k class with the kids each year. We talked about how guinnea pigs chew, chew, chew all day long. In fact, our guinnea pigs ate their house - twice. That was the inspiration behind the Mr. Guinnea Pig song.

Composer-palooza!

We've spent the past few weeks learning about some classical music pieces and their composers. First, we heard "Pictures at and Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky. Mussorgsky wrote the music after visiting an art exhibit of a friend. We listened to an ox pulling a cart, two women arguing, and children playing in a field of flowers, among others. Then we drew our own pictures to more of Mussorgsky's music.

The following week we learned about Saint Saens and his composition "Carnival of the Animals". We colored pictures of each of the animals, and then pretended to be lions, horses, elephants, kangaroos, birds, and fish, and we even went hunting for cuckoo birds in the forest.

Last week we learned about George Frideric Handel, who composed a piece titled "Water Music" for the King's party. The King wanted to have the party on a floating barge, but there wasn't enough room on the boat for the guests and the musicians. So, 2 barges floated side-by-side down the river - one full of dancing party-goers, and the other with Handel and an orchestra playing Handel's "Water Music".

We took turns being the musicians in the boat, playing instruments along to the "Water Music", while others of us were the waves lapping at the boat.

Farm Day

It was farm day at school! The kids got to go outside and meet several farm animals today. Inside we sang farm songs, and played a pattern-mapping activity using shapes. We started by listening to "The Happy Farmer", a classical piece by Robert Schumann. We talked about the kinds of jobs that make farmers happy. We chose 3: riding a horse, driving the tractor, and milking a cow. We assigned each of these activities to a shape.

Next we pattern-mapped the song by listening to the distinct music phrasings, listening for those that repeat. We then pretended that we "drove a tractor", "rode a horse" or "milked a cow" in time with the music as we placed the shapes in order of the pattern of the song.

Then we added instruments to the mix, and "played" the patterns we created with the colored shapes.

Be a Composer/ Conductor

This week we talked about 2 music "jobs". One is the composer, and the other the conductor.

The composer takes a piece of paper and an instrument and "writes" music by drawing 5 lines, and adding notes to the lines and spaces. We wrote our own music, and colored notes on a separate sheet which we then played on a xylophone to hear our creations.

We also learned about a famous composer, Chopin (pronounced "sho-pan") who was a composer of piano music. We played our pretend pianos to Chopin's "Minute Waltz", and looked at real music to see what the lines and notes look like.

The conductor takes a piece of music and leads musicians in playing it. We each took turns being the conductor (the rest of us played the handbells). The musicians had to watch for the conductor to start and stop the music, and to know when to play fast or slow, loud or soft. We ended with a big round of applause for everyone!

We've been talking about Groundhog Day in music this week. We learned that a famous legend tells that the groundhog can predict the weather by whether or not he sees his shadow. We learned this fun song and then pretended to be a groundhog poking his head out of his burrow after a long Winter of hibernating. See if you can predict if we'll have 6 more weeks of winter, or if spring will come early....

We celebrated "space week" by going on a space walk, and searching for aliens with our "light sabers" to the theme from "Star Wars".

You can make your own light saber by covering the end of a flashlight with a tube of colored tissue paper. I wrapped ours in a sheet of plastic (from a page protector) to give it a little stability too. (It's pretty tough to fight aliens with a floppy light saber).

This is a favorite winter activity. First we got ready for "winter" play by putting on our coats, hats, gloves, boots, etc.

Then we skated, made snow angels, rolled in the snow and pretended to throw snowballs at one another.

This week we talked about how God makes each snowflake different from every other snowflake, just as he makes each one of us different from one another.

We looked at pictures of real snowflakes (Snowflakes by Kenneth George Libbrecht).

We cut out snowflakes and danced to "We Are All Like a Snowflake" by Greg and Steve.
